Werner Arnold (Semitist)

Werner Arnold (* 1953 in Bad Neustadt an der Saale ) is a German Semitist , Arabist and professor at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

Life

From 1979 Arnold studied Islamic studies , Semitic and applied linguistics (English) at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . There he graduated in 1985 with the master's thesis The Vocabulary of the Arabic Dialects of Bahrain with a Magister Artium . He then spent two years as part of a research stay in the Aramaean villages of the Syrian Qalamūn . He used his research results in his doctoral thesis, which was entitled Phonology and Forms of New West Aramaic and which received his doctorate summa cum laude in Erlangen in 1988 . From 1988 to 1991 he was a research assistant in the research project "New West Aramaic" with Otto Jastrow . In 1991 Arnold became a research assistant at the chair for Semitic studies at the seminar for languages ​​and cultures of the Middle East at the University of Heidelberg with Klaus Beyer . In 1996, after a research trip to Dhofar in 1993, he moved to the Institute for Non-European Languages ​​and Cultures at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg as a research assistant. There he completed his habilitation in 1997 with The Arab Dialects of Antioch and subsequently worked as a senior assistant. In 1999 he accepted an offer from Heidelberg University to succeed Beyer on the chair for Semitic Studies at the Seminar for Languages ​​and Cultures of the Middle East, which he has held since then.

Arnold's main research interests are in Semitic studies , especially in New West Aramaic and New South Arabic . His main work is probably the five-volume presentation of New West Aramaic (Volume I: Texts from Baxʿa; Volume II: Texts from Jubbʿadīn; Volume III: Folklore texts from Maʿlūla; Volume IV: Oral literature from Maʿlūla; Volume V: Grammar; published between 1989 and 1991).
