Werner II von Alvensleben (* before 1429; † between 1472 and 1477) was lord of the castle on Gardelegen , electoral Brandenburg council and court marshal.

family

Werner II von Alvensleben came from the Low German noble family von Alvensleben . His father was the governor of Altmark Gebhard XIV. Von Alvensleben (mentioned 1392–1425), his sister the abbess of the Neuendorf monastery , Sophie v. A. (mentioned 1454-1470). In his first marriage he married a von Plotho , in his second marriage Elisabeth von der Schulenburg, a daughter of Werner and niece of Richard von der Schulenburg, master master of the Order of St. John . Gebhard XVIII († 1494) and Dietrich von Alvensleben (mentioned in 1465) are known of his sons. A daughter Sophie (mentioned 1489–1495) was also abbess of the Neuendorf monastery.

Life

As the successor to his father, he must have been the owner of Gardelegen Castle as early as 1429. In that year he vouched for the Elector Friedrich I at the Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg because of the bridal treasure of Princess Magdalene, the daughter of the Elector. For many years he served the state as the Electoral Brandenburg Council and as such took part in various diplomatic missions.

When Elector Friedrich II founded the Swan Order in 1443 , he and his wife Elisabeth were among the first members. In 1447 he administered the office of court marshal to the elector. In 1448 he received Gardelegen Castle, which until then had only been a pledge, as a hereditary fief . In the further course of his life he was able to expand his possessions considerably.

In 1450 he was in the Brandenburg Army in the war between Brandenburg and Saxony. In the Battle of Beelitz he was taken prisoner with twenty other Brandenburg knights and was only released a year later after peace was concluded.

Memorial stone

Werner died in old age between 1472 and 1477 and was buried in the Alvensleben grave in Neuendorf Abbey. In the Nicolaikirche in Gardelegen there is still a memorial stone that reminds of him. It shows the Alvensleben coat of arms with a crest - an “impressive work of the scratch technique” (Udo v. Alvensleben). The inscription contains the year 1484 at the top and the words at the bottom: werner son gert fan alfeslefen . It is unclear whether the stone has always been in Gardelegen or only later came from the Neuendorf monastery, where there are no more tombs of the White Line of Alvensleben, to the Nicolaikirche. It may be a building block from Gardelegen Castle or a town house that belonged to the Alvensleben.
