Werner Koch (* 11. July 1961 ) is a German Free Software - developer . He is best known for his role as the lead developer of the GNU Privacy Guard (GnuPG or GPG). He was awarded the FSF Award 2015 for his services to GnuPG .

Koch was also co-founder, head of office and German vice chancellor of the Free Software Foundation Europe . In 2001 he founded the IT security company g10 Code GmbH and has been running it ever since.

He lives in Erkrath .
