Weronika Alexandrovna Marchenko

Weronika Alexandrovna Marchenko ( Russian Вероника Александровна Марченко ; born November 27, 1969 in Moscow ) is a Russian activist. She is the founder of the non-governmental organization "Mother's Right" (in German about right of the mother) , which campaigns for the rights of survivors of the army.

Life

Marchenko studied journalism at Moscow University . During perestroika she worked for Junost magazine. In 1986 she was part of the youth television program "12th Storey" and the international youth movement "Next Stop Soviet" (1987–1990). Martschenko founded the "Mother's Right" foundation in 1990 as a student.

Marchenko is a member of the Russian Human Rights Research Center and the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation. She lives in Moscow.

Mother's Right

The aim of this NGO is to the circumstances to fathom where there outside of combat operations to deaths in the Russian army is coming. Most of these deaths are classified as suicides , leaving relatives unable to make claims. Martschenko's group conducts investigations into the circumstances of the deaths, whereby they can often prove that the alleged suicide was instigated or was murder. The organization offers moral and legal support to the families and lobbies against corruption in the army.

According to Martschenko, 5,000–6,000 families of military service members turn to their organization every year. In 2007 the society helped 5,323 families. Her lawyers have represented 132 pro bono cases in 21 cities in Russia. In 2008 they won 66% of all lawsuits.
