The Gerstunger Museum

The Werratalmuseum Gerstungen is a regional museum founded in 1932 in the rooms of the former castle in the municipality of Gerstungen in the Wartburg district in Thuringia .

The museum documents the diversity of the trades trades formerly resident in Gerstungen with tools and implements, guild chests and craft books from the 17th century. Objects from everyday rural and handicraft life are presented.

The exhibition on Werra ceramics is evidence of the once high boom of the pottery trade in Gerstungen . In addition to the potters' tools, such as a turntable with a slip box, glaze mill, molded wood, painting croissants and colored earth, visitors will find an extensive collection of valuable rural ceramics. Noteworthy are the humorous pottery sayings on bowls, plates and brides with a handle . The textile trade presents itself as a complete exhibition of equipment for flax processing via the spinning wheel to the large hand loom with linen cloth made on it.

The Gerstung Castle

The geological department shows the visitor the nature of the formations and the occurrence of mineral resources that shaped the economic development of the Gerstung area.

The history section includes a large number of the finds discovered by the museum's founder Arno Volland (1888–1968) and other local researchers, they are supplemented by display boards and maps. These include bone finds, funeral urns, simple tools and jewelry.

The demonstration model of the Gerstunger Schloss, rural furniture and costumes as well as technical equipment of the Gerstunger train station draw a bow into the recent past. In a side wing of the castle, which was under the jurisdiction of the judiciary, there are simulated prison cells.

Scientific study

In 2011, the Gerstunger Museum with four other museums from Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Switzerland was selected from 30 applicants for the project "New Local Museums and Knowledge Production" of the University of Oldenburg . The Volkswagen Foundation supports this project with more than 600,000 euros.

"It's about further developing the local museum as an institution," explained Doris Drude. "More and more museums of local history are being created and all of them aimlessly collect the same thing. Museums should find their own collection direction. However, this requires the assistance of experts. The flood of new institutions has mostly drowned attractive museums. The term home is increasingly being viewed as derogatory in the museum landscape used, so that many museums put it off, "says Drude. In addition, the university project aims to investigate whether museums have an identity-creating effect.
