Werther's Original (formerly Werthers Echte ) is a brand for caramel candies. The name refers to the small town of Werther , where August Oberwelland founded the Werther'sche Zuckerwarenfabrik and today's August Storck KG in 1903 , and where the confectioner Gustav Nebel is said to have invented the candy six years later. According to the manufacturer, Werther's Original is now available in over 80 countries and is Storck's most successful brand worldwide.

invention

According to Storck, Werther's originals are an invention of the confectioner Gustav Nebel. On the packaging of the candy it says:

“It happened in the town of Werther in 1909. There the confectioner Gustav Nebel created his best candy at the height of his ability. He took fresh cream, good butter, white granulated sugar, golden-yellow rock candy, a pinch of salt and plenty of time. And because in the end the cream candies turned out particularly well, they were called Werther's Original. They still taste as delicious today as they were nibbled on Master Nebel's baking sheet. "

As older residents of Werther confirm, Nebel was one of the first employees at the Werther sugar factory.

Creation of the Werther's Original brand

Caramel sweets have been part of the Werther'schen sugar goods factory's products from the very beginning. Brand names were still uncommon at the time; consumers named the mostly unlabelled products after the manufacturer or place of manufacture. It is believed that the sweets from the sugar factory were simply known as "Sweets from Werther" or "Werther's sweets". Storck's first branded candy, and according to the company the first branded candy in Germany at all, were the "1 Pfennig RIESEN" introduced in 1934.

In 1969 Storck introduced the “Werthers Echte” brand. It was one of several well-known brands that the company brought onto the market at that time. Within eleven years, nimm2 (1962), merci (1965), Campino (1966) and Toffifee (1973) were created. Since 1998, the sweets have been called "Werther's Original" in Germany too.

The town of Werther and the Werther's Original brand have only a few points of contact today. The Storck company moved to neighboring Halle (Westphalia) between 1945 and 1949 and no longer operates any production facilities in Werther. Although the advertisement for Werther's Original traditionally plays with small-town motifs, it does not use recordings from the eponymous location. In Werther itself, the brand is no more present than anywhere else. In memory of the painter Peter August Böckstiegel, Werther presents itself as the “Böckstiegel town” and does not refer in any way to the well-known sweets.

Recent developments

In addition to the conventional hard candy, Storck now sells a soft version for chewing (“cream toffees”) and a smaller, sugar-free version (“minis sugar-free”). In 2008 a third variant was added with the name “melting caramel”. In addition, there has been another variant of Werther's sweets since September 2008, which is sold under the name “Werther's Original Eclair”. In 2009 further products were launched under the name "Werther's Original Chocolate and Caramel Specialties".

The TV commercials are accompanied by the song Everything I Own by singer David Gates of the music group Bread .
