Western Kentucky Railway

The Western Kentucky Railway ( AAR reporting mark WKRL) was a Short Line - Railway Company in Kentucky in the United States .

history

In March 1982 Pyro Energy Corporation , later Costain Coal Inc., acquired various rail lines from the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad (ICG) to its own coal mine at Blackford . To do this, she founded the Tradewater Railway (TWRY).

With effect from January 1, 1995, the Rail Management Corporation took over the railway company and renamed it Western Kentucky Railway. In 1995/1996 the section from Princeton to Waverly was closed. The section between Princeton and Fredonia took over the Fredonia Valley Railroad in 1999 and began to operate.

With the takeover of the Rail Management Corporation in 2005, the railway company became part of the Genesee and Wyoming railway group .

After two years there had been no more transports on the remaining route network, an application was made in January 2011 for the final shutdown.

Route network

The standard gauge route network comprised a north-south route from Princeton to Waverly. In Princeton there was a transition to the ICG, from 1986 to the Paducah and Louisville Railway . At Blackford there was an east branch to Clay , Providence and the coal mine northwest of Wheatcroft . In Providence there was a transition to the Seaboard System Railroad , later CSX Transportation .

Three EMD GP18s were used by the Tradewater Railway and later the Western Kentucky Railway . Furthermore, EMD GP7 and EMD GP9 belonged to the vehicle fleet under the direction of the Western Kentucky Railway .
