The Westernport Highway is a trunk road in the south of the Australian state of Victoria . It connects the South Gippsland Freeway and the South Gippsland Highway in Dandenong with Frankston Flinders Road north of Hastings . This creates a connection between the southeastern suburbs of Melbourne and the west coast of the Western Port .

history

The Westernport Highway was laid out in the 1960s as a two-lane road under the name Lyndhurst Road and was gradually expanded into a four-lane highway with median reservation between the South Gippsland Freeway and Cranbourne Frankston Road in the 1990s because the freight traffic was dramatic increased.

VicRoads is currently planning an upgrade to freeway standard for this route with height-free connections to Glasscocks Road , Thompsons Road (S6), Hall Road and Cranbourne Frankston Road (S4).

The highway begins outside Lyndhurst , where the old South Gippsland Highway (S180) meets the new South Gippsland Freeway (M420). The Westernport Highway is seamlessly connected to the South Gippsland Freeway. It runs as a four-lane road with a median to the south, crosses the railway line to Cranbourne , a traffic light and five roundabouts.

At Cranbourne Frankston Road the highway becomes two lanes and is designated as A780. It goes through another roundabout and ends on Frankston Flinders Road (C777), 2 km north of Hastings .
