The western petrel ( Procellaria westlandica ) is a seabird that nests in New Zealand .
Taxonomically, the western petrel belongs to the genus Procellaria in the petrel family (Procellariidae) alongside the gray petrel ( P. cinerea ), the white-cheeked petrel ( P. aequinoctialis ) and the Parkinson's petrel ( P. parkinsoni ).
features
The western petrel is a large, uniformly dark black-brown petrel and has a clumsy appearance. Only occasionally do white feathers appear in a few individuals. Its powerful bill is pale yellow with a black tip, legs and feet are black.
Habitat and way of life
The bird spends most of its time over the South Pacific between Australia and South America. He comes ashore to raise his young; the only known nesting site of the species is at Punakaiki on the South Island of New Zealand . The chicks hatch between July and August, that is, in the winter of the southern hemisphere; they are then fed until November and then leave the colony for the next seven years. In winter, flocks of these birds can sometimes be seen at Punakaiki when they return from foraging.
Danger
The western petrel is classified as endangered by the IUCN . A population of around 4,000 animals is assumed.
