West Lower Saxon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term West Lower Saxon denotes

  • the west of the German state of Lower Saxony .
  • a not clearly defined group of dialects of Low German . In today's Low German dialectology, the term West Low Saxon is not established and is rarely found. In the course of research history, the term has been filled with very different meanings. Examples of the use of the name are West Lower Saxon as
    • a term for West Low German when the term Lower Saxony is used for the entire Low German language ( East and West Low German).
    • a name for the Lower Saxon dialects in the Netherlands . These dialects are usually referred to as Nedersaks in the Netherlands . In Dutch dialectology, however, they are often considered Dutch dialects because they are topped off by Dutch . In this context, these dialects are also called East Dutch . The term West Low Saxon ( West Nedersaksisch ), on the other hand, emphasizes the relationship to the Low German dialects in Germany.
    • as a name in Hubert Grimme for a "pure Lower Saxon" dialect group that includes "East Dutch" and "Real Westphalian" (from Emsland to Märkisch).
    • a dialect group widespread in western Lower Saxony within the dialect group commonly known today as Northern Lower Saxony . The Oldenburger Platt also belongs to this dialect group .
    • a group of western dialects of West Low German that has no Lower Franconian and no or only a few Westphalian features.
