Wet-only collector

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A wet-only collector or rain collector is a collecting device for recording the deposition of sedimenting dry and wet particles ( wet deposition ) from the atmosphere. In contrast to the bulk collector , the collecting opening of the wet-only collector is only open during precipitation events and requires a supply of energy.

Structure and procedure

Wet-only collectors consist of a collection unit, a housing, a precipitation sensor, a cover with drive and the power supply. Usually the collection unit consists of a combination of funnel and bottle. The precipitation sensor is used to open the cover in the event of rain, snow, sleet or hail. Wet-only collectors can be equipped with a cooling and heating unit so that the sample temperature in the collection bottle can be kept at an almost constant temperature and longer collection periods are possible. Preserving chemicals may be added to the bottle.

As with the bulk collector, flow obstacles must be observed and a free flow to the collector must be ensured. Even with the wet-only collector, the collector opening should be one to two meters above the ground.

During the actual sampling, non- sedimenting particles are also collected, which are washed out of the atmosphere by precipitation from the air as a so-called wash-out. In practice there is no complete collection of wet sedimenting particles.
