Wetlands International

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wetlands International is a non-profit organization that deals with the conservation of wetlands and their sustainable use.

The organization was founded in 1954 as International Wildfowl Inquiry with the original focus on the protection of water birds . It was later renamed the International Waterfowl & Wetlands Research Bureau (IWRB), which means that the topic of wetlands that has since been added was also included in the name.

Other organizations with similar goals later emerged in Asia and America , including the Asian Wetland Bureau (AWB) (founded in 1983 as INTERWADER) and the 1989 Wetlands for the Americas (WA). In 1991 these three organizations agreed to cooperate closely. In 1995 they merged to become Wetlands International .

There are 15 national offices, the additional head office is in Wageningen in the Netherlands . 150 people work for the organization, around 1,000 people are organized in one of the thematic specialist groups and 15,000 volunteers supply Wetlands International with, among other things, observation data.
