Wetzelshain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wetzelshain is the name of a late medieval desert on a conveniently located plateau in the central part of the Hohe Schrecke ridge in the Sömmerda district in Thuringia .

It is located in the forest district of the same name, about 5.5 km west-southwest of the city of Wiehe . The place emerged as a clearing settlement and was first mentioned in a document in 1226. The village belonged to the Petersstift to Mainz and had its own church . But as early as 1480 the place was called desolate. At the village site, there are still isolated remains of settlement in the form of uneven ground. The neighborhood of the desert is also very interesting: only two kilometers to the east are the remains of Rabenswalde Castle , which was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Rabenswalde , a sideline from the Counts of Kevernburg . The castle was besieged and destroyed after the Rabenswalder also appeared as robber barons in the Thuringian Count War around 1350. It is possible that the settlements near the castle were attacked and destroyed on this occasion. Only about 1.5 km southeast of Wetzelshain is another desert - it is called Lichtehain .
