The Wetzsteinhöhle is a dry cavity ( mine ) created by human intervention and is located in the quarry parcel (in the middle of the forest at about 700  m above sea level ) in the municipality of Bizau in Vorarlberg , Austria . The Hüttbach flows below the whetstone cave.

geology

The most important production areas for sandstones are the shallow seas near the coast, the shelves . Most of the sand comes from the mainland and is transported to its final storage location by rivers and ocean currents. Sandstone itself is produced by cementing ( cementation ) of loose sand and admixtures of coarser or finer sediment particles (clay, silt, pebbles).

The sandstone mined here had an ideal structure for whetstones and was considered one of the best quality whetstones.

Origin and access

The whetstone cave was created through the mining of raw material (sandstone), especially for whetstone production in the Schwarzachtobel in Schwarzach between 1910 and 1943.

After a long-term ban, the members of the Bizau Mountain Rescue Service repaired the access to and the possibility to visit the whetstone cave on a voluntary basis. However, access can be temporarily blocked.

The whetstone cave is located about 300 m from the chapel at Bildbühl and 1050 m as the crow flies from the center of Bizau and 21 km from Lake Constance ( Bregenz ).
