Whau River
length 5 km

The Whau River is despite its name is no flow in the true sense, but an elongated estuary of the southwestern Waitemata Harbor in the greater Auckland on the North Island of New Zealand . It extends five kilometers from its confluence between the Te Atatu Peninsula and the Rosebank Peninsula around Avondale to the south. It runs towards Manukau Harbor in the south, but ends at New Lynn North .

The Whau River extends over the suburbs of Glendene and Kelston . Auckland City is to the east and Waitakere City is west of the arm. It has a small branch, Wairau Creek in the southwest.

The area around the estuary is under protection as Motu Manawa / Pollen Island Marine Reserve . Pollen Island or Motu Manawa and the nearby tiny island of Traherne Island are on the northern tip of the Rosebank Peninsula. The islands are connected to the mainland by dams and bridges that are part of New Zealand State Highway 16 .
