from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Where Everything Is Music is a song with music by Philip Glass and lyrics by Jalal ad-Din ar-Rumi . The song is part of the opera Monsters of Grace by Philip Glass and Robert Wilson .

Musical design

The song was designed by Philip Glass so that the instrumentation mimicked the string and woodwind instruments of the Middle East. Four voices are singing.

text

The translation of Rumi's text is by Coleman Barks . The first few lines are:

"Don't worry about saving these songs!
And if one of our instruments breaks,
it doesn't matter.

We have fallen into the place
where everything is music.

The strumming and the flute notes
rise into the atmosphere,
and even if the whole world's harp
should burn up, there will still be
hidden instruments playing. "
