from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Whim House , also Whim Hall , originally Blair Bog , is a mansion near the Scottish village of Lamancha in the Council Area Scottish Borders . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish Monument Lists in Monument Category B. Furthermore, various outbuildings are separately protected as monuments.

history

Archibald Campbell , who later became the third Duke of Argyll , acquired the property, designated Blair Bog , around 1730. He developed it as an agricultural property, on which he built the nucleus of today's Whim House between 1731 and 1734. William Adam may have been involved in the planning of the mansion . The building, which has since been renamed Whim House , was extended in 1759 based on a design by John Adam . John Campbell, 4th Duke of Argyll sold Whim to James Montgomery, 1st Baronet in 1763 . He let Whim House expand, increase and redesign, which largely gave the manor house its current appearance. In the 20th century, Whim House housed a hotel ( White House Hotel ). Today a nursing home is housed there.

stables

The associated stables are located around 100 m south of the manor house. The complex, built in the 18th century, is known as Whim Square because of its square layout . On a map from the Ordnance Survey from 1858, a short wing is identified as a ruin. The stables are classified as a monument of the highest category A.

Cowden Lodge

Located on the passing road ( A701 ), Cowden Lodge flanks the entrance to the property. The masonry of the lodge, which was built in the late 18th century, consists of stone blocks that were built into layers of masonry. On the front facing south-east, two triplet windows flank a niche in which a statue is placed. An extension to the rear is more recent. The building closes with a hipped roof . It is classified as a Category B monument.

Ice house

The ice house is located near the stables . It is an approximately egg-shaped cavern that is lined with stone blocks. The access is worked as a flat barrel vault . The ice house is also protected as a category B monument.
