White House, Helensburgh

White House is a villa in the Scottish town of Helensburgh . The building is on Upper Colquhoun Street in the north of the city. In 1993 the villa was included in the Scottish Monuments List in the highest category A.

The building was completed in 1899 for H. S. Paul . As an architect, Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott was responsible for the planning. White House is one of only two buildings designed by this architect. The second is the Sandford Hill Hotel in Wormit , Fife . Architecturally, the building forms the transition between the traditional large villas and the arts and crafts movement that can be found in the surrounding area. Perhaps Charles Rennie Mackintosh was inspired by the architecture of the White House when planning the nearby Hill House and adopted some of the motifs.

description

The White House is built on two floors and has a roughly L-shaped floor plan. The facades of the asymmetrical villa are plastered with Harl in the traditional style and painted white. Windows and entrance doors are of cream-colored window surrounds of sandstone surrounded. The individual wings of the White House either end with tiled gable roofs or flat roofs . The building was divided into two halves by a renovation before 1960. Before that, the walls were decorated with Art Nouveau paintings.
