The White Memorial Chapel is an ecumenical chapel in Salt Lake City , the capital of the US state of Utah . The building is one of the few surviving early meetinghouses of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . In the 1970s, it was relocated to Capitol Hill in front of the Utah State Capitol.

history

The 18th ward of the Mormons used the Brigham Youngs school building for their meetings. In 1880 the architect Obed Taylor was commissioned to build his own community house for the community, which he designed in neo-Gothic style. The construction took place in the walled property of Young in Salt Lake City. Taylor died before the building was completed in 1881. The building was completed in 1882.

In 1902 the chapel was enlarged to create one of the largest Mormon meetinghouses in Utah. The no longer needed building was laid down and reconstructed in front of the Utah State Capitol from 1976 to 1979. The extensions from 1902 were reversed. The chapel is now used for ecumenical purposes.
