The publishing house White Star Srl is an Italian book publisher for illustrated books, travel guides, cookbooks, car books, animal books and gift books with headquarters in Milan .

history

The publishing house 'White Star Srl' was founded in 1984 in Vercelli, Italy by Valeria Manferto De Fabianis and Marcello Bertinetti . The goal was to produce illustrated books and to gain a foothold in this market segment. The logo was a white pentagonal star with the tip pointing up. In the first few years it was a publisher for monographs and illustrated books on cities, regions, countries, geocartography and ages. The two founders worked together on many books and involved their families, for example Marcello Bertinetti and Angela White Bertinetti were responsible for the photos, Valeria M. De Fabianis for the texts and Carlo De Fabianis for the graphic implementation. White Star published abroad by granting licensed titles to better networked publishers.

From 1987, the 'Edizioni White Star' brand was developed to advertise on the book cover. The white star logo was still used on the spine of the book. From 1990 to 1992 the publisher experimented with a new logo that represented a 'W s ' in the form of a stylized duck. It was used on the lid and back. Subsequently, a protectable logo 'Edizioni White Star' was used on the book cover until 1997. After that, every publisher's logo was missing on the cover until 2009. At the time, the publisher was developing various brands for markets in Europe and overseas and founded subsidiaries in Paris and Wiesbaden.

Due to the focus on high-quality photographs, the publishing house built up its own photo archive, from which freelance authors could illustrate their books.

In September 2005, the German subsidiary 'White Star Verlag GmbH' opened in Wiesbaden to intensify the advertising and distribution of the printed products translated into German. This also included a German-language website. The publishing products offered in 2007 comprised 121 book titles and 4 calendars. Soon the distribution and delivery for the German-language product line was given to the 'THM' in Munich. The office in Germany ended work in May 2009 and was liquidated at the end of 2010.

During the expansion, the publishing house 'White Star SpA' went bankrupt in 2009.

In autumn 2009 a company for the acquisition called 'Edizioni White Star Srl' was created. The new company was 35% capitalized by ' DeAgostini Spa', a publishing group in Novara, 20 km away at which 'White Star' had many books printed, and 65% by the 'Orlando Italy Fund' ( Private Equity Fund ). The goal was to take over the entire business of 'White Star'. The creditors' meeting decided on October 22, 2009 on the modalities of the takeover and how much debt the new publisher would have to take on.

The new publisher again introduced logos on the spine of the book 'wS' and on the cover of the book 'wS Edizioni White Star' for Italian-language print products and slightly modified for the other languages. Four years later, in 2011, the publishing house was taken over 100% by De Agostini. During this time, 'White Star' moved its offices to Novara. The publisher became a brand in the De Agostini Libri Spa publishing house.

At the beginning of 2016, the resale of the publisher was prepared. The De Agostini group followed their announcement to streamline their wide range of services in the publishing group in order to be able to introduce more efficient industrial structures. The De Agostini group wanted to strengthen the areas of partworks magazines, Italian educational media , non-illustrated books, children's books and the satellite and digital TV channels of 'De Agostini Digital'. At the time, White Star was selling licensed titles in 60 countries through publishing partnerships. There were direct sales in Italy and through partnerships in France, Germany, Great Britain and the USA. At the time of sale, White Star had 27 employees. The White Star publishing house was then sold to 'NewCo White Star SrL' in mid-2016. Exactly 35% of the company shares are held by 'Vis Value Partecipazioni', an investment company headed by Pietro Boroli (then vice-president of De Agostini, chairman of the De Agostini book division). Another 35% was acquired by 'Nava Press SpA', a printing company for high-quality printed matter (part of the group of companies in the Bandecchi family managed by Paolo Bandecchi). Roberto Nardini, employed as Senior Manager (at that time management consultant of the Bandecchi Group, company developer with experience in product development and innovation) holds a 20% stake. Andrea Pasquino, currently CEO of White Star Srl (previously in De Agostini Product Development and from 2009 CEO of White Star in the De Agostini Group) acquired a 10% stake. With the restructuring of the ownership structure, the shareholders want to contribute their skills and knowledge to the company in order to develop competitive advantages that strengthen market power in the target markets and open up new business areas. For example, White Star should refer new business partners / licensees to the printing company 'NavaPress'.

The company is based in Milan, but operations are managed from the company's headquarters in Novara.

distribution

In the United States and Canada, printed matter is sold in stores through Sterling Publishing Co., Inc.

From the beginning of January 2008 'Travel House Media' (THM) in Munich, a subsidiary of the Ganske publishing group, took over the distribution of the German-language program from 'White Star Verlag' in Wiesbaden. THM expanded its sales range to include further travel guides as well as the areas of cooking, technology, illustrated books and gift books. The delivery was taken over by the KNO publishing house at the same time. After a few years, THM gave up marketing. From the beginning of 2013 GeraNova Bruckmann Verlagshaus GmbH took over sales as well as marketing and press work for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In the run-up, a number of titles were published in the individual publishing houses of the publishing house, B. Bruckmann, GeraMond and Frederking & Thaler published as licensed titles in German. The Munich Publishing Service took over the delivery at the same time. Around 100 German-language titles from the 'White Star Verlag' brand were available at the beginning of the year. In the meantime, a provisional sales office took over sales in the German-speaking area. Since the beginning of 2018, 'DK-Verlag' Munich has been a sales partner for Germany, Luxembourg, Austria and Switzerland. The delivery is still carried out by the 'Verlegerdienst München'.
