Whiteford Sands
Whiteford Sands refers to the beach at the northwest end of the Gower Peninsula in South Wales, north of Broughton Bay . The north end of Whiteford Sands is on the River Loughor marshland . The beach can only be reached via a barely visible path that begins on the southern outskirts of Cwn Ivy near Cwm Ivy Tor .
This area is of no importance as a bathing beach, as it can only be reached by walking a few kilometers and is also designated as a bird sanctuary. The only larger dunes on Gower are on Whiteford Sands, while on the eastern edge there are smaller pine forests that are otherwise difficult to find on Gower.
Whiteford Lighthouse
On the northern edge of Whiteford Sands, Whiteford Point, the striking remains of the Whiteford Lighthouse can be seen from afar; only the steel frame remains from him. It is the only Victorian cast iron lighthouse in South Wales and also the only one accessible via a steel walkway with wooden planks at low and high tide. Its exact date of construction is unknown, but it is believed that it was built between 1854 and 1865. The lighthouse went out of service in 1933. It was a very important landmark as the shallows of the River Loughor caused sixteen ships to go aground in 1868 alone, killing 30 people. The closure of the Llanelli cargo port at the eastern end of the River Loughor Bay then made the lighthouse obsolete and it was abandoned.
The remains of the tower are within walking distance at low tide, similar to Worm's Head and Burry Holms .
