Whitneyville and Machiasport Railroad

The Whitneyville and Machiasport Railroad is a former railway company in Maine ( United States ). It was founded on March 3, 1842 as Franklin Railroad and renamed Palmer and Machiasport Railroad in 1843 . The 12.67 kilometer long route of the company served only the freight traffic and ran from Whitneyville , where large quantities of timber were produced, to Machiasport harbor . It was opened in 1843.

On February 28, 1845, the railway was renamed Machiasport Railroad , followed by the final designation Whitneyville and Machiasport Railroad in 1872 . The railway was shut down in 1892. Seven years later, the Washington County Railway opened its Bangor – Calais line, which ran on the former Whitneyville & Machiasport route. This route has now also been closed.

The Lion locomotive from the time the railway was founded has been preserved as a museum.
