Washington County Railway

The Washington County Railway is a former railway company in Maine ( United States ). It was founded in July 1894 as the "Washington County Railroad" with the aim of connecting the border town of Calais , which had had a railroad connection since 1839, with the city of Bangor and to open up the southeast of the state. As early as March 7, 1893, the company's owner, Joseph N. Greene , had received the concession for this railway line. On August 1, 1898, he first acquired the St. Croix and Penobscot Railroad with its 34.3 kilometer long Calais – Princeton line , some of which crosses Canadian territory.

In 1898 the company completed its standard-gauge route network, which consists of the Washington Junction – St. Croix Junction (158.2 km) and the branch line from Ayer's Junction to Eastport (25.3 km). In Washington Junction there was a transition to the Maine Shore Line Railroad , which made the connection to Bangor. In 1906 a 1.9 kilometer branch to Woodland was opened.

In the 1909/10 financial year, the company owned 14 locomotives, 18 passenger cars, 4 baggage and mail cars, 27 company vehicles and 435 freight cars. In addition to passengers, wood and coal are specified as the main cargo.

The reorganization in "Washington County Railway" took place after bankruptcy on December 18, 1903. On July 1, 1911 the company was merged into the Maine Central Railroad . This railway had already acquired all shares in the Washington County Railroad in 1905. After Maine Central was taken over by Guilford Transportation in 1981 , the network was shut down for economic reasons. Only the Calais – Woodland route is still used today by Pan Am Railways . The connection to the rest of the railway network is now only via Canada. Milltown Station has been the easternmost station in the United States since the Eastport and Calais lines closed.
