Wicd (Wireless Interface Connection Daemon) is an application for managing network connections exclusively for Linux . Wicd is a free software project that aims to make wireless connections easier and more user-friendly.
The program is based on Python and is the most popular alternative to GNOME's NetworkManager . In contrast to this, the application does not depend on GNOME libraries, which makes it particularly attractive for stand-alone window managers such as Fluxbox or Openbox .
history
The first version 1.0.0 was published on November 14, 2006 in the English language ubuntuforums.org. The original name was Connection Manager, but it was changed to wicd due to much confusion with the GNOME NetworkManager.
features
Wicd is backwards compatible with Unix commands such as iwconfig
or ifconfig
and supports the most common encryptions, such as Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) or Tunneled Transport Layer Security (TTLS). It is also fully configurable through the console user interface ( wicd- curses ):
