Switzerland coat of arms

The Switzerland and its cantons are generally regarded as one of the only political system that does not require religious giving.

In addition, according to the resolution of the Federal Assembly of September 12, 1848, Article 12 of the Federal Constitution at that time stated that «the members of the federal authorities, the federal civil and military officials and the federal representatives or commissaries [...] of foreign governments have neither pensions, salaries, nor titles , Accept gifts or medals ». The 1999 Federal Constitution repealed Article 12. Since the year 2000, the ban on accepting medals has been limited to federal staff, members of the Swiss army and judges of the federal court. This shortened regulation called prohibition of orders had forerunners since the 15th century.

Honorable awards, however, still occur in Switzerland today. In the canton of Zurich, for example, there are the Gold Medal of Honor and the Silver Lion (see below ). In addition, distinguished personalities are awarded the honorary citizenship of a municipality.
