WikiHouse is an open source project for designing and building houses . The aim is to democratize and simplify the construction of sustainable residential buildings with low resource consumption.

development

The project started in 2011 as an experiment by Tav, James Arthur, Beatrice Galilee, Nick Ierodiaconou and Alastair Parvin at the Gwangju Design Biennale in Gwangju , South Korea. Based on the collaboration between design practice 00: / from London , the creative collective Espians, and the civil engineering office Momentum, the project has since grown in several subgroups on different continents.

Technical implementation

WikiHouse detail: plywood panels and clamp connection

WikiHouse enables users to download Creative Commons licensed construction plans for wooden houses and customize them using the free 3D modeling software Sketchup . On the basis of the 3D model, the individual components of the wooden house can be manufactured from plywood or plywood panels using a CNC machine . The construction of WikiHouse structures does not require any special connecting elements, as the cut-out wooden parts interlock with a clamping wedge connection inspired by classic Korean architecture. The framework of a WikiHouse can be put together in less than a day even by people without formal construction training. Before it is ready for occupancy, the frame construction must be supplemented with formwork , thermal insulation , electrical cabling and piping .

Governance

The basic rules of the international WikiHouse community are formulated in the WikiHouse Constitution. These basic rules are constantly being reflected on and further developed.

Everyone who uses, adapts or further develops WikiHouse products and tools, or who follows or leads the project, is seen as part of the WikiHouse community. Anyone can be part of the project, there is no formal membership or leadership.

relevance

The social relevance of the WikiHouse project can only be measured once some of the fundamental changes sought by the initiators have actually been implemented compared to previous planning and production processes in the residential building sector. If it is possible to transfer some of the concepts and procedures known from the distributed production of digital commons (such as modularization , standardization, reusability, etc.) to the area of the production of kits for residential building, this would actually be a contribution to the Change of the previously known forms of production.
