history

Historic cannon on the old fortress wall

The fishing town is one of the three medieval suburbs of Minden. In addition to Marien- and Simeonsvorstadt, it belongs to Minden's settlement centers and is still preserved today as a closed area.

“The fishing town, where the oldest settlement core has been suspected, has no finds before the 12th century; The results of the building research also only show an initial, planned settlement during this time. "

- Westphalian City Atlas - Minden :

Here the fishermen settled south of the ford across the Weser directly on the western bank of the river. The first port of the city of Minden, which was in operation until 1910, was located between the settlement and the city of Minden. The city wall was only drawn around the suburb in the 16th century. The fishing town was later included in the defense system of the Minden fortress and was protected against the Weser and the hinterland with a fortress wall. Today only the former fortress wall to the Weser, built in 1830, with notches for rifle and cannon defense remains. As part of the demolition in 1878, it was dismantled to breast height and today it has more of the function of a flood wall . In front of it is the Mindener Schlagde .

The fishing town is mainly built up in small parts with specialist houses from the 16th and 17th centuries with the gable facing the Weser.
