The Wiki Wiki Web is the first ever wiki or editable website. Your name is also often written in Camel Case ( WikiWikiWeb ) as it was necessary for links there. It was launched on March 25, 1995 by its inventor, programmer Ward Cunningham , to accompany the Portland Pattern Repository website for discussion of design patterns .

Camel Case as a link

Hyperlinks between pages on Wiki Wiki Web are created by putting together capitalized words, a technique known as "camel case" . This convention of wiki markup is still followed by some newer wiki software, while others, such as the MediaWiki software, Wikipedia , allow links without a camel case.

As a result, many separate terms, such as the name Wiki Wiki Web or Wiki Base, have to appear almost exclusively in Camel Case in the texts of the wiki, since they are linked. The page headings themselves are free of this restriction and show the proper names in normal spelling.

Origin of the term

The namesake: A "Wiki Wiki Shuttle-Bus" at Honolulu Airport (2007)

Cunningham came up with the name "Wiki Wiki Web" because he remembered a clerk at Honolulu International Airport who told him to take the "Wiki Wiki Shuttle," a shuttle bus route that runs between the airport terminals . "Wiki Wiki" is a reduplication of "Wiki", a Hawaiian word for "fast". Cunningham's idea was to make the Wiki Wiki Web pages quickly editable for his users, so he initially considered calling it "Quick Web" but later changed his mind and named it "Wiki Wiki Web".

The name Wiki Wiki Web originally also applied to the Wiki software written in Perl . It was later renamed "Wiki Base". The site is often referred to as simply a "wiki" by its users, and a convention established among early wiki users was that the use of the word with a capital W applied to the original site only.

history

The software and website were developed by Cunningham in 1994 to facilitate the exchange of ideas between programmers. The concept was based on the ideas developed in HyperCard stacks that Cunningham built in the late 1980s. On March 25, 1995, he installed the software on his company's (Cunningham & Cunningham) website, c2.com.

In December 2014, Wiki Wiki Web was attacked by vandals and is now in a read-only state.

On February 1, 2015, Cunningham announced that the wiki had been rewritten as a single-page application and migrated to the new Federated Wiki. As of May 2015, the WelcomeVisitors page of the Wiki Wiki Web contains the following description:

“Welcome to Wiki Wiki Web, also known as Ward's Wiki or just a Wiki. Many people had their first wiki experience here. This community has existed since 1995 and consists of many people. We always accept newcomers with valuable contributions. If you've never used a wiki before, be prepared for a little culture shock. The beauty of the wiki lies in the freedom, simplicity, and power it offers. ... All wiki content is work in progress. Most of all, this is a forum where people share ideas! It changes when people come and go. Much of the information here is subjective. If you're looking for a specific reference site, try Wikipedia; WikiIsNotWikipedia! "
