The Wikitude (World Browser) is augmented reality software for mobile devices that was developed by the Austrian developer company Wikitude GmbH (Mobilizy GmbH until the end of May 2011) and released as freeware in October 2008 . Wikitude is the first mobile app , on a location-based approach of the augmented reality based (Augmented Reality, AR).

functionality

In location-based augmented reality, the position of the objects on the screen of the mobile device is calculated using the position of the user ( GPS ), the direction in which the user is currently looking ( compass ) and the motion sensor. Practical application examples can be found among others. a. in the area of location-based services (for example when asking for the nearest ATM), tourism (with dynamically generated information about sights) and games. In contrast to this, marker-based augmented reality uses a marking (marker, e.g. QR code ) for tracking .

The central element of the Wikitude World Browser is the location . While the location plays a subordinate role in the normal Internet , browsing content in the Wikitude World browser is optimized for mobile location-related use. In contrast to the map view , which offers an abstract view from above , the augmented reality view offers a direct view of reality that is "expanded" with additional content.

User-generated content

In addition to the optimization of the visualization of location-based content, the recording of content for the Wikitude World Browser has also been optimized for location-based use. Using KML and ARML , data from the community ( user-generated content ) can be recorded. Additional tools are also offered to make content available in the Wikitude World Browser, for example web services can be registered that deliver data dynamically. Wikitude was a W3C member and is further developing ARML as part of a W3C project.

discussion

Wikitude World Browser on iOS

There are different views as to whether Wikitude's location-based approach to Augmented Reality can really be assigned to Augmented Reality. The main point of criticism here is the accuracy, since any inaccuracies in GPS, compass and motion sensors could add up when calculating the position of the virtual objects. In practice, however, this technique turns out to be much easier to implement and use than the marker-based approach. In a 2010 listing of The Telegraph's top 5 AR apps , three mobile apps use the location-based approach ( Google Goggles uses both approaches).
