Wikiwand is a software for the alternative display of articles from Wikipedia . The graphical user interface is English, the Wikipedia content can be displayed in all available languages.

history

The motivation for the project is that, according to Wikiwand, the design of Wikipedia has hardly changed for 13 years and the user-friendliness is too low, especially on mobile devices .

The user interface was founded in Tel Aviv-Jaffa in January 2013 with a $ 600,000 investment from Business Angel Saar Wilf, the current chairman of Wikiwand . The interface officially launched in August 2014.

In 2015, Wikiwand received the People's Voice Webby Award in the “Best User Experience” category.

technology

To see Wikipedia in a Wikiwand environment, plug-ins are available for the web browsers Google Chrome , Mozilla Firefox and Safari . Apps for the iOS and Android operating systems are available for mobile devices .

If the extensions for Wikiwand are installed on the device, the web browser no longer opens the original Wikipedia websites, but shows the pages in a different design. The most striking thing about it is a changed navigation, a different typography , larger images and a short preview of linked articles.

Business model and criticism

The company plans to finance itself through advertising in the future. It originally announced (2014 and 2015) that it would donate 30 percent of the profits to Wikipedia. This goal has not been explicitly stated since the end of 2015. Other considerations are product recommendations and improving the layout of other websites.
