Wilfrid Werbeck

Wilfrid Werbeck (born May 5, 1929 in Elberfeld ; † January 10, 2016 in Tübingen ) was a German church historian and professor of church history at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen .

Life

Wilfrid Werbeck (also: Wilfridus Werbeck) was born as a pastor's son in Elberfeld. He grew up in Berlin, where he experienced the time of the Airlift. In Berlin he began studying the Ev. Theology, but moved to the University of Tübingen in 1950, where he became Gerhard Ebeling's first assistant after graduating . In 1956 he followed Ebeling to Zurich. However, he returned to Tübingen as early as 1957, where he found the center of his life with his family and was to be scientifically active for a total of 40 years. In 1958 Wilfrid Werbeck received his doctorate on the late medieval commentary on psalms by Jacobus Perez of Valencia. From 1957 to 1964 Werbeck worked for the Tübingen publishing house JCB Mohr . His Perez study was also published here. Werbeck also took over the editing of the third edition of the standard work and concise dictionary " The Religion in Past and Present (RGG) ." In 1964 he returned from publishing to the University of Tübingen and began editing the commentary on sentences by the Tübingen theologian Gabriel Biel . In 1970 he completed his habilitation, which he dedicated to Biel's penitential theology. In 1983 Wilfrid Werbeck was appointed to a professorship at the University of Tübingen. The focus of his academic work was on the history of theology in the late Middle Ages and its prerequisites for Martin Luther's theology .

Wilfrid Werbeck died after a long illness and was buried on January 22nd, 2016 in the cemetery in Derendingen . Wilfried Werbeck was married to Martha Werbeck geb. Weidtmann (1930-2020).
