Wilhelm Liebknecht Prize

The Wilhelm Liebknecht Prize of the University of Giessen is an award that was launched in 1990 and is awarded to scientists and named after Wilhelm Liebknecht , a member of the Reichstag born in Giessen and co-founder of the Social Democratic Party of Germany .

The prize honors “outstanding historical and social science publications” that “deal with the development of civil society in Germany in the spirit of Wilhelm Liebknecht's life's work”. Works on history and politics in the 18th and 19th centuries with a focus on Hesse are taken into account, "which are dedicated to the social foundations for building and securing democratic communities". The prize is endowed with 2500 euros.

The jury includes the mayor of the city of Gießen, a representative of the city council, the chairman of the Upper Hessian history association and the chair for modern history and political science at the Justus Liebig University of Gießen .
