Ulrich Sieg (born May 27, 1960 in Lübeck ) is a German historian and adjunct professor at the Philipps University of Marburg .

Scientific career

After graduating from the Oberschule zum Dom in Lübeck, Sieg studied history , philosophy and German at the universities of Kiel , Hamburg and Marburg. In 1993 he was with a work on the Marburg University History Dr. phil. PhD . He then worked as a research assistant at the Research Center for University and Science History at the Philipps University of Marburg. He has been a lecturer there since 1994. In 1999 he completed his habilitation with an investigation into the history of German-Jewish ideas in the First World War . In 2005 he was appointed adjunct professor in Marburg.

Sieg represented chairs at McGill University in Montreal (2007/08), in Marburg (2010/11), Frankfurt am Main (2011/12) and Munich (2016).

Sieg has been a member of the Scientific Council of the Brothers Grimm Society , of the Historical Commission for Hesse since 2013 and of the Board of Trustees of the Wolf-Erich-Kellner Memorial Foundation since 2019 . He is liaison professor of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom at the University of Marburg.

Research areas

Sieg's research areas include the history of universities and science in the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of political ideas since 1800, the history of Judaism in the German Empire and the Weimar Republic , the history of anti-Semitism , the history of philosophy and the history of the game of chess .

Awards and grants

Ulrich Sieg won the Science Prize of Hessian History and Regional History of the Association for Hessian History and Regional Studies (1988), the Wilhelm Liebknecht Prize of the University of Gießen (1993), the Habilitation Prize of the Association of Historians of Germany for outstanding achievements by young academics (2000 ) and the Prize for the Promotion of the Translation of Humanities Literature (2008).

Sieg received grants from the Gerda Henkel Foundation , the German Research Foundation , the Prof. Dr. Adolf Schmidtmann and the Fazit Foundation . In 1997 he was a Loewenstein-Wiener Fellow at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati , Ohio, in 2003 Member of the Common Room at Wadham College in Oxford and in 2007 Fellow in residence at the Friedrich Nietzsche College in Weimar . In 2017/18 he received a scholarship from the Klassik Stiftung Weimar .

Chess sport

As a chess player Ulrich Sieg was active with the Lübeck Chess Club from 1873 in the 1999/2000 season in the German Chess League and played international matches for the Schleswig-Holstein Chess Association . He has held the title of FIDE Master since 1995 . His highest rating was 2335 from July 1992 to June 1993.
