history

The publisher's founder, Franz Steiner, was born in 1892 as the son of a print shop owner. He took over his parents' company and specialized in particular in ancient and rare foreign languages and oriental works. In the interwar period, this resulted in close contacts with both the German Oriental Society and the Prussian Academy of Sciences, which were to prove important for the later founding of the publishing house. After founding the publishing house, Franz Steiner was able to conclude long-term contracts with both institutions, and from the beginning he worked closely with the Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft (the forerunner of the current German Research Foundation).

As early as 1946, the city of Wiesbaden offered Franz Steiner the opportunity to set up a scientific print shop; In 1949 he finally received the license to found a publishing house in Wiesbaden. The new publishing house established itself quickly and after just a few years it was an integral part of the scientific publication system in West Germany. This was also due to the fact that it was possible to take over some of the already existing and internationally renowned magazines such as Hermes and the Geographische Zeitschrift . The ancient historical journal Historia , newly founded in 1950, quickly established itself as an internationally important journal. The reputation of the rest of the publishing program also benefited from the prestige of these magazines.

After Franz Steiner's death in 1967, the company was sold to the Athenaeum publishing group of the Harcourt, Brace & Jovanovich (New York) concern. In 1974 he switched to the publishing group of the Deutsche Apotheker Verlag . In 1984 the publishing house moved from Wiesbaden to Stuttgart , the headquarters of the publishing group.
