The school is located in the area of the cathedral district on the site of a former cathedral curia. The cathedral school has been a school tradition at this location since the Middle Ages. A vault from the 14th century still reminds of this today. The current building complex was created in 1928 from two older school buildings: from the former building trade school (built in 1877, entrance to the “Dom Volksschule”) and from the “Higher Citizens School on the Model Railway ” (built in 1874), a secondary school for girls. In 1928 the two schools were connected by the architect Friedrich Wilhelm Virck , who designed the connecting wing (today's entrance area) in the style of brick expressionism of the 1920s.

After a sharp increase in the number of pupils, extensive new building measures were carried out in what was then the “Oberrealschule zum Dom”. Various scientific rooms, an earth science room, a library and a spacious auditorium with wood paneling and 900 seats were built. In addition, drawing rooms, gymnastics rooms, a roof garden and a winter garden were set up on the former staircase tower of the girls' secondary school at the model railway.

The former art teacher Asmus Jessen designed various details of the interior. A floor mosaic in the expressionist style was created in the entrance hall , wall and ceiling lamps in the shape of a star, showcases and railings were also designed by him. Inside, in the spirit of expressionist architecture, brick wall friezes were combined with medium blue wooden doors. The functionalist elements of the large exterior windows in the style of the twenties are still striking today.

By the air raid on Lübeck on March 29, 1942 , the OzD was almost completely destroyed inside, with almost all details of the interior being destroyed. In the course of the reconstruction, the auditorium was redesigned in the style of the 1950s.

The school was extensively renovated in 2005 with funds from the Possehl Foundation and the municipal investment fund. The completely listed building received new windows, new lighting fixtures and computer-controlled heating. In winter, the historic main gym on Mühlenstrasse , which is also under monument protection , is used for physical education. It was built in 1891 by Adolf Schwiening in the neo-Gothic style .

The school yard was redesigned. The school garden has been extended by a pond and a planted rampart . In addition, a volleyball and basketball field was inaugurated in 2007 and a former bunker was converted into a climbing wall .

Adult education

The premises are used for working adults in the form of an evening school.

music

The Oberschule zum Dom offers numerous musical working groups: These include a big band that can be booked for events. In addition, there is a lower school and school choir, a musical group and a school orchestra if there is enough demand. As early as the 5th grade, the students can visit junior ensembles, which prepare them for the larger music groups. A special feature is the choir of teachers, parents and alumni, the "black robins". The 50 or so singers rehearse regularly and perform at all concerts.

Sports

The OzD has a rowing team and numerous sports clubs. A special feature is the successful participation in the national youth training for the Olympics competition .
