Georg Goebel

Georg Goebel (born April 1, 1909 in Boppard ; † October 7, 1987 there ) was a German choir director and composer .

Life

In 1927 Goebel began studying school music and German at the University of Cologne . According to his own statement, he oriented his pianistic training on great role models such as Edwin Fischer and Wilhelm Kempff . As a teacher he taught music and German in Lübeck at the Oberschule zum Dom . He founded the Lübeck Knabenkantorei there after the Second World War .

In 1961 he was appointed director of the Laubacher Kantorei boys' choir as the successor to church music director Adolf Wieber . He led this choir with great success until his retirement in 1971.

Goebel spent his retirement in his hometown of Boppard. There he worked on a systematic "choral vocal training " and wrote inspired and contemporary sacred and secular music for various ensembles, some of which was published by the music publishers Tonger and Fidula .

Particularly noteworthy is the setting of the cycle of poems "The 13 Months" by Erich Kästner for four-part mixed a cappella choir , which was completed on March 26, 1980. A severe stroke put an abrupt end to his compositional work. A setting of the 13th month was probably not planned. The successful first performance of the cycle by the "Kammerchor Gießen-Wetzlar" directed by Jan Hoffmann (Stadttheater Gießen) took place on April 9, 2011 in the Ev. Stadtkirche zu Laubach on the occasion of the annual meeting of the "Friends of Former Singalumni". On behalf of the prevented Udo Samel (Burgtheater Vienna and former Laubach cantorist) Roman Kurtz (Gießen) took over the recitation of Kästner's poems.
