The Lübecker Knabenkantorei an St. Marien ( LKK ) is a German boys' choir from Lübeck .

history

The choir was created in 1947 from the choir work of the music teacher Georg Goebel (1909–1987) at the Oberschule zum Dom . In the course of 1948 it was opened to students from other schools, and with the Christmas singing on December 21, 1948 in the Reformed Church , it appeared for the first time under the name Lübeck Kantorei .

Since 1951, the choir has regularly been on concert tours in autumn. In the spring of 1952, the St. John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach was performed in front of an audience of more than 1,000 in the Jakobikirche - an event that soon became a tradition.

In 1954 the name was changed to Lübeck Knaben-Kantorei in order to emphasize its character as a boys' choir. Since 1956, the boys 'voices singing along the lines of the Stuttgart Hymnus Boys' Choir in a kind of robe with a white collar, which is located at the costume of carolers inspired singer.

Rehearsal Home (2011)

After Georg Goebel left Lübeck in 1961, the music teacher at the Johanneum and former cantorist Hans-Jürgen Wille (1930–2004) took over the management of the choir. In 1966 the Christmas Oratorio was recorded on record with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra under Karl Münchinger . In the same year was in the garden of the company building the nonprofit in the King Street own samples home, which by the citizens gardens can be reached.

As a result of conversations between Hans-Jürgen Wille and the Marienpastor Hans-Joachim Thilo , the choir became the Lübeck Knabenkantorei an St. Marien in 1970 , and Wille was appointed cantor of the Marienkirche . The choir sang here in up to 30 services a year. The highlights were the almost annual St. John Passion on Good Friday as well as the Christmas singing during Advent.

An important trip abroad led in 1972 to the UK, where the choir under the Lübeck Week in Coventry Cathedral sang. In 1984 the Kantorei received the Hanseatic City of Lübeck's Hanseatic Culture Prize. In 1998, for the 50th anniversary, there was an international concert tour to the east coast of the USA with concerts in Boston , New York City and a joint meeting with the important American Boychoir in the university city of Princeton (New Jersey) .

In 1998, Hans-Jürgen Wille declared that he wanted to put the choir direction in younger hands. A search committee decided on Michael D. Müller, who took over the management in 1999.

Since 2009 a girls choir called Canta! built parallel to the boys, this is - like the young choirs - directed by Heidi M. Becker.

Jan-Hendrik Jensch led the choir as Michael Müller's representative from mid to late 2012.

In June 2016 it was announced that the position of choir director would be filled on January 1, 2017. On September 27, 2016, the board of directors of the Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities appointed Karl Hänsel (* 1993 in Dresden ), a member of the Dresden Kreuzchor and assistant at the Singakademie Dresden , as the new choirmaster and cantor at St. Marien.

construction

The choir is not a boarding school choir. The cantorists live with their parents and attend different schools. The rehearsals as well as the individual voice training take place in the rehearsal house, which was built in 1966 and expanded in 1983 and 2016. The choir is divided into four groups: the sparrows (5-year-old boys playfully start singing lessons) the junior choir, the prechoir and the concert choir made up of boys and men. The male voices are usually former boy's voices who can look back on many years of choral experience. The male choir traditionally sings in the celebration of Easter Vigil in St. Marien. The singers use a substantial part of their free time: In addition to rehearsals, there are church services , concerts , concert tours, radio and TV recordings as well as CD recordings.

repertoire

The a cappella -literature ranges from the Renaissance to the Modern . Walter Kraft dedicated his Te Deum to the choir . The focus is on the performances of oratorios and cantatas by Bach and Dieterich Buxtehude as well as music for worship services. Michael D. Müller expanded the repertoire especially in the field of male choir literature and opened it up to English cathedral choral music.

In addition, boys' voices take part in opera performances at Theater Lübeck .

Concerts

Every year on Good Friday the choir performs the St. John Passion in St. Mary's Church . In addition, the two "night sounds", sung by the male choir, are part of the annual program in summer and autumn. Further highlights are the concert tour taking place during the autumn holidays and the 4 Christmas carols, which attracted more than 5000 visitors in 2014.

Awards

In 2010 the choir received the 2nd prize in the category “Boys Choirs, Mixed Voices” of the German Choir Competition .
