Roswitha Hecke (* 1944 in Hamburg ) is a German photographer .

Life

After completing her apprenticeship as a photographer, Roswitha Hecke met the director Peter Zadek and spent years photographing his productions as well as those by Rainer Werner Fassbinder and, in Paris, films by Éric Rohmer . She lived for a few years with the writer Wolf Wondratschek , with whom she traveled through America in the 1970s and together published the book “Menschen-Orte-Fäuste”. Hecke took portraits of numerous artists, including Omar Sharif , Heinz Bennent , Ingrid Caven and Andrés Segovia .

Her book "Liebes Leben" about the Zurich prostitute Irene was awarded the "Kodak Prize" for the best photo book in 1979 by Rogner & Bernhard and in 1982 in the Rowohlt paperback edition by the Buchkunst Foundation as one of the "most beautiful books of the year ".

Hecke traveled extensively to all continents, she lived in Morocco for three years and in 2002 she moved to St. Petersburg, where she taught at the Academy of Fine Arts (master class photography). Hecke has two sons and now lives in Hamburg.

Photo art

With her candid pictures, Roswitha Hecke tries to explore strange, often simple milieus and worlds. She observes closely, without prejudice and with empathy. Some photography cycles deal with people on the fringes of society: transvestites, homeless people and prostitutes, to whom she lets their dignity in the pictures. Another topic is her examination of the "fascination of men" and the forms of expression of machismo . She published her pictures in numerous magazines, for example in Vogue , Twen , Stern , Playboy , Theater heute , Die Zeit and Spiegel . The director of the “ Berliner FestspieleJoachim Sartorius judged her work : “She never makes her“ models ”ridiculous, but she doesn't glorify them either. Her eye never stops asking. So her pictures are sincere, sometimes humorous and always distinctive. "
