Society House (2016)

The classicistic house at Königstrasse 5 in Lübeck's old town is a listed building and has served the Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities as a society house since 1891 . The neighboring house at Königstrasse 7 has been included in this use since 1891.

Ownership story

The history of ownership of the property can be traced back to before 1290, when the merchant Alexander Soltwedel lived in the house. One of the better-known later owners was the Lübeck councilor Gottschalk Vellin in 1337 . In 1531 the widow of the councilor Johann Lüneburg († 1529) , Anna b. Kortsack, stated as the owner, in 1564 her son, the mayor Hieronymus Lüneburg , and from 1595 his son, the later councilor Hieronymus Lüneburg († 1633) . In 1673 the house came to the von Wickede family and in 1704 to the von Rumohr family . In 1762 the councilor Johann Christoph Weigel bought the property. He commissioned the Danish architect Christian Frederik Hansen with the fundamental redesign of the building, which is still formative today. During the French period in Lübeck , the councilor Johann Christoph Coht was the owner; however, the house was used for his purposes by the French commandant St. Bias. In 1824 the house was acquired by Senator Jacob Behrens . In 1876, the privateer Emil Minlos became the owner, from whom the house was ultimately transferred to the non-profit organization via the Lübecker Feuerkasse (1887). Until the 19th century, the house in Lübeck was known under the house name of Wickede-Haus .

Building history

After dendrological investigations of the roof structure, the house could be dated to around 1330 and has been remodeled several times since then. The building on Königstraße, which was redesigned in 1804 with the three-axis facade by CF Hansen, was adapted for its needs by the Lübeck architect Theodor Sartori after it was acquired by the non-profit organization. On the ground floor there is the gastronomy with the common rooms, below which the landscape room, also known as the picture room, protrudes with nine shepherd scenes from the Rococo based on designs by Jacopo Amigoni and stucco over-portals and wall panels. About the garden room and the terrace leads to the citizens gardens . In the great hall hangs the "Vorsteher-Galerie" with portraits of some deserving chiefs of the non-profit organizations from the 19th century. The rooms for the board of directors and administration as well as the library of the society are located on the upper floors. The globe above the Frontipiz comes from the previous building, the society house in the Breite Straße. The building is connected to the house at Königstrasse 7, the plastered facade of which is crowned by a dwelling. This house, which is also under monument protection, dates back to the 15th century; the appearance that is characteristic today was established in 1830. The gateway used to be part of a passage into the garden that reached behind the house and was also accessible via the Langen Lohberg .

The rehearsal home of the Lübeck Knabenkantorei is located in the garden of the non-profit .
