Hans-Joachim Thilo (born March 28, 1914 in Chemnitz ; † January 23, 2003 in Lübeck ) was a German Lutheran theologian , psychoanalyst and university professor .

Life

After studying Protestant theology, he passed the first theological exam in 1937 and the second in 1939. In 1940 he was appointed to the Marienkirche in Pirna and was ordained here . In the same year he received his doctorate in theology from the University of Jena . His dissertation reflected his enthusiasm for the ethnic ideas of the German Christians at the time, which also led him to work at the Institute for Research and Elimination of the Jewish Influence on German Church Life in Eisenach .

Thilo's experiences in military service, his wounding near Kiev and his imprisonment , first in Canada , then in England , led him to rethink and start over. In December 1947 he returned to Germany and received a pastor's position in the parish on Lietzensee in Berlin-Witzleben . At the same time he built up the church advisory work here. From 1956 to 1961 he worked at the German Evangelical Lutheran Church in Geneva . Then he was a speaker at the Evangelical Academy in Bad Boll until he was appointed pastor of the Marienkirche in Lübeck in 1966 , where he worked until his retirement.

In 1973 he qualified as a professor at the University of Hamburg in the field of practical theology . He remained the parish pastor, but held lectures regularly in Hamburg. In 1979 he was awarded the title of professor.

His main work was published in 1957 under the title The Unsplit Man and has also been translated into Dutch and English. In addition to smaller writings on counseling and pastoral care, the therapeutic function of worship was another focus. He processed his experiences with National Socialism and World War II under the title Under the Scars it still hurts .
