The Laubacher Kantorei was a boys' choir of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau (EKHN), which was founded by Adolf Wieber in Laubach in 1949 and closed in 1981.

history

After Easter 1949, the choir began in the rooms of the Laubach Castle , which were made available by Count zu Solms-Laubach as an alumnate , with 14 singers who sang in the church service in the city church on the first Sunday after the opening. The alumnate was called Singalumnat . The cantorists mostly attended the Paul Gerhardt School , a secondary school with a grammar school , which was also run by the Protestant church. That is why the choir initially operated under the somewhat cumbersome name of the Choir of the Singalumnat of the church Paul Gerhardt School in Laubach .

By 1950 the choir had grown to 40 singers. As early as this year, in addition to several concerts on weekends in the near and far surroundings, the first long concert tour was carried out, which led to southern Germany. Approx. In 1951 the name of the choir was changed to Laubacher Kantorei . In 1953 the concert tour went to Denmark and Sweden. Since 1950, the Laubacher Kantorei was often heard on the radio (especially Hessischer Rundfunk ). In 1951 she represented the Dresden Kreuzchor , whose travel permit from the GDR to West Germany had been revoked at short notice, with great success. In 1956 the choir recorded three records of Bach cantatas with Karl Ristenpart . In addition to many concerts and concert tours with a cappella choir works, the Christmas Oratorio , the St. John Passion and the B minor Mass by Johann Sebastian Bach were performed. By 1961 the number of singers had grown to over 60.

At Easter 1961 Adolf Wieber retired, he was replaced by Georg Goebel , who had previously founded and directed the Lübeck Boys Choir (today Lübeck Knabenkantorei an St. Marien ). At the same time, the choir moved into a newly built, modern alumni building on the northern edge of Laubach am Ramsberg. Under the direction of Goebel, the choir reached its maximum size of over 70 boys and young men and a level that need not fear comparison with the traditional choirs in Dresden and Leipzig . In 1964 the Laubacher Kantorei opened the Handel Festival in Göttingen (direction: Günther Weißenborn ). In 1966 and 1968, several records were sung that were released by the Cantate company . The annual concert tours led u. a. to northern and southern Germany, Belgium and Alsace . From 1963 the choir sang a musical Vespers on the second Saturday of each month in the Dreikönigskirche in Frankfurt , in which Prof. Helmut Walcha also took part.

Georg Goebel retired in 1971 and was replaced by Hans-Michael Beuerle , with whom the Kantorei recorded Anton Bruckner's Requiem in D minor for the record. In 1972 he handed over the direction of the choir to Dieter Kurz and later took over professorships at the Karlsruhe University of Music and the Freiburg University of Music. Until his death in 2015 he was artistic director of the Freiburg Bach Choir . Dieter Kurz was followed by Heinz Rudolf Meier , who worked until 1979 and then took over the management of the Wuppertal Kurrende . With him, the Laubacher Kantorei published the record of choral music from four centuries . The last choir director (1979–1981) was Konrad-Jürgen Kleinicke, who got to know the choir as a trainee lawyer in the 1960s. Before, during and after his time as a choirmaster, he also directed the Wiesbaden boys' choir , for which he took over the sheet music from the Laubacher Kantorei.

The Evangelical Church of Hessen-Nassau closed the alumnate and the choir in 1981.

From the ranks of the former cantoists were u. a. Michael Huthmann , Udo Samel , Dietrich Hilsdorf , Uwe Heilmann and Thomas Erich Killinger are well known.

Former cantorists

Today the "Freundeskreis Laubacher Kantorei" (until 2012: "Freundeskreis former Singalumnen") keeps memories of this time alive. He organizes the annual meeting in Laubach, which in addition to social gatherings always includes a concert, the proceeds of which are donated, for example in recent years for the renovation of the organ of the town church in Laubach. He also maintains a website and maintains the choir archive, which contains many documents, photos, films and tapes with concert recordings (they were digitized in 2009 and 2010), and organizes trips together.
