Reconstructed Bagrati Cathedral (2014)

The Bagrati Cathedral (georg. ბაგრატი; ბაგრატის ტაძარი), actually Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos (georg. ყოვლადწმინდა ღვთისმშობლის მიძინების ტაძარი) is a cathedral from the 11th century, built in Kutaisi in Georgia .

history

The cathedral is located on Ukimerioni Hill above the Rioni River . It was built at the beginning of the 11th century under the rule of King Bagrat III. (ruled 978-1014). There is an inscription on the north wall that reports the completion of the church in 1003. The three-icon complex with a large central dome is based on its predecessor, the monastery church in Öşk Vank (Oschki). The three semicircular apses are hidden behind a straight east wall, triangular niches on the outside indicate the position of the apses. A tambour supported by four free-standing pillars increases the dome.

The church was ravaged and blown up in 1692 by the Ottomans who raided the Kingdom of Imeretia , causing the dome and ceiling to collapse.

The badly damaged church was initially not rebuilt. Restoration work began in 1952.

World Heritage

In 1994 the cathedral was entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with the Gelati Monastery . In 2001 the church was handed over to the Georgian Orthodox Apostle Church . Contrary to the recommendation of ICOMOS , the church was reconstructed in its original form and completed in 2012. UNESCO then put the cathedral on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger during the construction phase and removed it from the World Heritage Site in 2017, in which only the Gelati Monastery remains.
