Pierre Bühler

Pierre Bühler (born January 12, 1950 in Tramelan ) is a Swiss Reformed theologian . He is professor emeritus for systematic theology , in particular hermeneutics and fundamental theology , and co-director of the Institute for Hermeneutics and Philosophy of Religion at the Theological Faculty of the University of Zurich .

Life

Pierre Bühler was born in Tramelan in the Bernese Jura in 1950 . He studied Protestant theology and philosophy at the Universities of Zurich and Lausanne . In 1974 he became a parish in the Reformed Evangelical Church of Canton Zurich ordained ; in the same year he took up an assistant position at the theological faculty of the University of Zurich with Gerhard Ebeling . In 1979 he did his doctorate with Gerhard Ebeling with a dissertation on the subject of “Cross and eschatology. An examination of political theology, following Luther's theologia crucis . For this he received the Scheuchzer Foundation Prize in 1981. In 1982 he became full professor of systematic theology at the University of Neuchâtel , where he headed the Institut de recherches herméneutiques et systématiques (later Institut romand d'herméneutique et de systématique ). From 1987–1989 and 1993–1995 he was dean of the theological faculty. In 1996 he received an honorary doctorate from the Faculté libre de théologie protestante of Montpellier.

From 1997 to 2015, Bühler was full professor of systematic theology at the University of Zurich and co-director of the Institute for Hermeneutics and Philosophy of Religion there. From 2002–2004 he was dean of the theological faculty. From 2006 to 2009 he was President of the Swiss Theological Society . From August 2012 to February 2015, Bühler headed the Institute for Hermeneutics and Philosophy of Religion in Zurich. Bühler retired in March 2015.

His work focuses on Luther and Kierkegaard research (in collaboration with the Søren Kierkegaard Research Center in Copenhagen), theological and philosophical hermeneutics (in particular Rudolf Bultmann , Gerhard Ebeling and Paul Ricœur ), the dialogue between theology, philosophy, natural and human sciences, the Relationships between theology and literature, especially with Friedrich Dürrenmatt . He maintains a close dialogue with the Center Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel. In exchange with religious studies , he is also interested in the relationship between image and text. In addition, he has recently been working a lot on the subject of humor.

Pierre Bühler is editor-in-chief of the Revue de théologie et de philosophie (Geneva / Lausanne / Neuchâtel) and co-editor of the Hermeneutic Studies on Theology (with Mohr Siebeck in Tübingen), Helvetica (a series of the Presses universitaires de Strasbourg) and the French translation of Luther (im Geneva publishing house Labor et Fides). In 2008, Pierre Bühler was co-editor of the Introduction à la théologie systématique .
