From 1895 to 1916 he was the head of the municipal building department in Munich until his death. It belongs to the so-called Hanover School , a variety of neo-Gothic in northern Germany.

life and work

After studying architecture at the Polytechnic School in Hanover between 1866 and 1870, Schwiening initially worked from 1870 and 1875 in the office of Conrad Wilhelm Hase , who was also a professor at the Polytechnic School and founded the so-called Hanover School . He passed the first state examination in 1871 and the second state examination in 1877. He then worked for the Prussian railway directorates in Hanover and Elberfeld . In 1879 he joined the city of Lübeck as a building inspector and was appointed building director there in 1888. During this time he erected a number of buildings in the neo-Gothic style, of which only the main gymnasium in Mühlenstraße and the former courthouse in Große Burgstraße can still be seen in their original form, combining local elements with typical characteristics of the Hanover School . In addition, he carried out extensive restoration and renovation work, particularly on the town hall (north facade, large staircase, citizens' hall, stock exchange hall).

His work in Lübeck, which initially met with a lot of approval, quickly came under criticism after he left Lübeck in 1895, where he was still celebrated as the “innovator of old Lübeck architecture”.

At the end of 1895 he came to Munich as head of the city building department. There he only made a few of his own designs, but was responsible for the general development plan, sewerage, water supply, road and bridge construction, etc. until his death in 1916. a. active.

A square in Munich, Berg am Laim district , was named after him until 1956.
