The Thecostraca ( size : capsule shell) are a subclass of marine crustaceans that, as adults, have an appearance that differs greatly from the classic form of crustacean . They live worldwide in the sea or in brackish water. Known groups are the sessile living barnacles and barnacles that feed by filtration. There are also parasitic representatives.

features

Because of the strongly derived body of the adult animals, the Thecostraca can only be characterized as monophylum through the characteristics of their larvae . Your cypris larvae have a five-pair lattice organ on both sides of the carapace center line . The lattice organ is a sense organ that presumably has a chemosensory effect. It consists of an elongated chamber covered with cilia, which is connected to the outside via many pores or a large terminal pore. The first pair of antennae of the cypris larvae is used for attachment when transitioning to a sessile or parasitic way of life.
