The Maxillopoda ( lat. Maxilla "jaws", "jaw"; Gr. Πούς "foot") are a class of (aquatic) crustaceans living in water . They are characterized by a reduction in the abdomen and its appendages. The head consists of up to five, the thorax of six and the abdomen of four segments and the telson . The appendages are absent on the abdominal segments.
The Maxillopoda are probably not a monophyletic group. In the opinion of many authors it is rather an embarrassment taxon in which the taxa that cannot be assigned to the other classes were collected.
