The Derocheilocarididae ( Gr .: "Bearded Shrimp") are a family of crustaceans . So far, 13 species in two genera are known from this group of animals, which was only discovered in 1943. They occur in the Mediterranean Sea , on the coasts of the Atlantic, on the coasts of Chile , Australia and South Africa, are part of the meiofauna and inhabit the sand gap systems . They can occur in extremely high densities (15 million copies per cubic meter of sand).
features
They are very small animals that reach lengths of 0.5 to one millimeter. The head takes up about a third of the body length and is divided into two sections by a transverse furrow. The first pair of antennas and four ocelles sit on the front . The posterior section of the head carries the mandibles and a second pair of antennae. The next seven segments form the thorax (arthropods), the first one carries the maxillipedas, the next four undivided stubby feet. The last two thorax segments do not have any limbs. The abdomen consists of three segments, the telson has a forceps-shaped end.
Reproduction
Reproduction has only been studied in Derocheilocaris remanei . The eggs are laid one by one, it can take two hours for the next egg to be laid. After being laid, the eggs are fertilized by the male. The larval development comprises eleven stages and begins with a late nauplius stage . At a temperature of 13.5 ° C, the crabs need 55 days to reach sexual maturity. The expected service life is 90 days.
