The Association for Hessian History and Regional Studies ("VHG") is an association for research into the regional history of Hesse , in particular the Electorate of Hesse .

founding

The VHG was founded in 1834 by Karl Bernhardi , Heinrich Schubart , Georg Landau , Christoph von Rommel and Karl Schomburg , among others . In 1835 Rommel was elected chairman, Bernhardi deputy, Landau as secretary and Johann Wilhelm Bickell as deputy, and Schubart as treasurer and first editor of the magazine. In 1835 the association had 78 real and nine corresponding members.

tasks

The association is committed to the protection and maintenance of historical monuments and art monuments, conducts Hessian state , regional and local history on a broad basis as well as regional studies and prehistoric research, preserves, secures and promotes Hessian folk art and Hessian folk goods in many Hessian local museums and works through the presence of its members in many monument protection advisory boards in its field of work, it contributes to the preservation and shaping of historical awareness among the Hessian population.

The Association for Hessian History and Regional Studies is a member of the General Association of German History and Antiquity Associations, which it co-founded in 1852 .

The association has branches in Bad Hersfeld, Gelnhausen, Marburg, Biedenkopf, Hessisch Lichtenau, Melsungen, Eschwege, Hofgeismar, Rotenburg, Felsberg, Homberg / Efze, Schmalkalden, Frankenberg, Kassel, Schwalm, Fritzlar, Kaufunger Wald-Söhre and Witzenhausen.

Publications

The organ of the association is the " Journal of the Association for Hessian History and Regional Studies " (ZHG) (122 volumes up to 2017). In addition, since 1861 the association has published the "Mitteilungen des Verein für Hessische Geschichte und Landeskunde" (MHG) and, since 1958, the series "Hessian research on historical regional and folklore" (53 volumes up to 2010).

The association awards a Georg Landau Medal and a Georg Landau Prize .
