Wilhelm Kübeler

Wilhelm Kübeler (born January 22, 1864 in Ober-Neissen , Silesia , † March 2, 1922 ) was a German photographer.

Life

In 1890 he came to Darmstadt and from 1900, presumably until his death in 1922, ran a photo studio with the addition “Atelier for photography and painting”. The studio was at Ludwigstrasse 16; he lived there with his wife and son.

Kübeler was one of a number of photographers who wanted to bring about a new development in portrait photography around the turn of the century , a "group for free artistic photography". Kübeler was one of the first professional photographers to take “more intimate photos” and “unretouched portraits”, and was somewhat under the influence of W. Weimer. Kübeler's works were published in the supplement Das Atelier des Photographer to the magazine for photography and reproduction technology. In a review in the journal of the Association for Hessian History and Regional Studies41 of 1908 his “really magnificent pictures” were praised as “a piece of cultural history of our time”. Kübler had photographed an old woman from Upper Hesse and farmers from Upper Hesse playing cards.

He photographed the athletes Josef Otto and Georg Schleidt , among others . Also known is a group photo of the Athleten-Verein-Darmstadt from 1895 , taken in the Orpheum amusement center in the northeast of Darmstadt.
