Wiligelmo da Modena

Wiligelmo da Modena (also Wiligelmus or Guglielmo ) was a stonemason active in Modena from approx. 1099 to 1120.

Life

The most important Romanesque sculptor in Italy, influenced by Roman relief and sarcophagus art as well as the art of Languedoc , created reliefs with large figures of the prophets on the west facade of the Cathedral of Modena (Adam and Eve and other scenes from Genesis , completed 1106). His name is passed down through an inscription. He is considered the first Italian artist who signed his works and had a lasting influence on the art of Emilia and Lombardy through his work (e.g. the reliefs on the Cathedral of Cremona ).
